Lost: A Haiku

Haiku about the grief of a child losing her father.

Lost

by Kim Campbell

It’s said I lost you

on the day you left the Earth

I lost myself, too

Inspiration

I wrote this haiku back in September when I was thinking about my dad, which I often do. I was thinking about how we sometimes say, “I lost (loved one),” when someone dies. Over time, I’ve wondered how that phrase came to be. I could research it, but I wrote a haiku about my feelings around it instead. :)

My dad died when he was 39. This month is 40 years since his passing. One more year than he was with us here on Earth. I was 14 and remember how lost I felt and for a long time. The good news is I don’t feel so lost anymore. I am grateful for the continuing healing and the ability to express my grief. I am working on a free verse poem about grief and feeling lost and may share that when I finish it.

*My husband was involved in the writing of this haiku, too. <3
