KidLit Creators & Books Celebration

Images of children's book covers and children's authors

There are many ways to support KidLit creators and their books. One exciting way is to attend book events at independent bookstores. At these, you have the chance to hear stories (sometimes ones that aren’t yet published!), get books signed and personalized (sometimes with doodles!), and meet fabulous KidLit creators! This is exactly what happened when I went to Gibson’s Bookstore last month. I heard stories, bought books, got them signed and personalized, and met two wonderful authors, Carrie Kruck and Kari Allen!

Carrie, Kari, and Gibson’s Bookstore created a welcoming and entertaining event. The children among the audience loved the stories and had the best questions for both authors. How cool is it for them to get to interact with some of the creators behind the books they read! There were goodies for people to take home - stickers, bookmarks, and decorated hot chocolate packets and marshmallows! It was a joy witnessing all the book love, including the long line forming for books to be signed, photos to be taken, and conversations to be had.

I’d love to hear about a KidLit celebration you or your children enjoyed and/or a favorite independent bookshop! Feel free to share in the comments!

1. Iggy Who Breathes Fire

Written by Carrie Kruck & Illustrated by Erika Meza

An inspiring book to empower children not only to be true to themselves, but to also remember that their own internal fire can remind others of theirs. The illustrations are an excellent fit for the story - vibrant and expressive - just like Iggy!

2. Maddie and Mabel: Ready For Snow
Written by Kari Allen & Illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss

The latest in the Maddie and Mabel series, I can’t wait to read this one! In the first book, I fell in love with sisters, Maddie and Mabel, and their personalities. They play, imagine, bicker, show compassion, and experience life in their own ways, together. With endearing illustrations, these beginner chapter books are a wonderful addition to your home, school, and public libraries!

3. Alfred Blooms

Written by Carrie Kruck & Illustrated by Carmen Mok

Carrie’s next picture book, coming out in March 2025, that is available for preorder! Can’t wait to read it!

4. Maddie and Mabel Make a Friend

Written by Kari Allen & Illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss

Kari’s next book in the Maddie and Mabel series, also releasing in March 2025 and available for preorder!
